Another hint I can give if you want a balanced game is to start with a map-draft:
Starting from first player you randomly draw 1 hex from the pool and you place it face-up on the table. Once the map is composed you start to place homelands starting from last player and then you can start to play.
We tested this alternative type of start during the develop and it is funny and strategic (it adds a couple of minutes to the game and the "switch-of-chair" start).
