Who likes boardgames ? Who knows some games’ authors? Who has already played Monopoly ? OK, who has never played Monopoly ? Who has heard about Junta, Funkenschlag, Princes of Florence? I am going to tell you about boardgames, by introducing a few of them and describing briefly the history and the market of modern boardgames.

There is no clear definition of the word “boardgames”.
The first games were born with the first civilizations of the Antiquity. The first dice appeared around -2500 BC. The story of boardgames is very ancient. People already played some in Egypt 2000 years ago. We know that the great pharaohs played Backgammon and a game called Senet because games have been found in the grave of Toutankhamon. In the meantime, others cultures developed other games, like the game of Go in China, 4000 years ago and the Awalé in Africa.

In the middle ages, games were condemned by the religions. But Chess games appeared around 950, from Persia or India. The first card games appeared during the 14th century.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the progresses of the printing technology allowed a wide distribution of the card games. Goose game is born in the same period in Italy. Many books of this century detailed various games’ rules.

In the 19th century, the industrial revolution allowed the multiplication of boardgames and the toys for low prices, popularizing in the same time the practice of the play. A few of the actual biggest companies were created in the same time period : Milton Bradley, Parker,… New games appeared, like wargames, born in Germany. The “Kriegspiel” arrived in France at the beginning of the 19th century. The other new games of the 19th century are letter and word games, but historical boardgames were the most important because they served propaganda.

In the 20th century, boardgames evolve at the beginning of the 30s. In 1935, an unemployed man, Charles Darrow, creates the Monopoly. The mechanism of the game was later on copied for several clones (“Pay Day”, “Mad”…). Monopoly represents the uncontested best-seller on the market of boardgames.

The first deduction game has been created in 1943 by Anthony Pratt. The name of the game comes from the english ‘Clue” and the latin “Ludo”. In the United States, the game’s name is simply “Clue”. The Cluedo is already printed and its mechanism hasn’t evolved since its creation. Many modern boardgames such as “Inkognito” can be considered Cluedo’s offspring…
In 1950, Alfred Mosher Butts invented the Scrabble. The game arrives in France in 1955 and will have a huge success. It’s still considered one of the best word games.
In 1957, André Lamorisse and Jean rené Vernes created « The Conquest of The World », that will become Risk. The game is a strategic simulation of war and will contribute to the public renown of wargames’ existence.

Diplomacy will be edited in 1961. This wargame was very innovative because of the total lack of dice and luck. To win the game, you have to ally with your opponents. There are many clubs, federations and websites about Diplomacy that has become an icon in the boardgaming world, and a world championship is organized every year in the United states.

The Trivial Pursuit has been designed by Chris Haney and Scott Abbot in 1981. It created the category of question/answers games. Many variations of themes and new publications will follow.
Many boardgames destinated to a large public then stormed the market, such as the Pictionary, Operation… The market of the boardgames will be very devided in the 80’s.
First of all, we have games for a large public and for children, that are published by big companies like MB and Parker : Cluedo, Risk for example. Those games are commercial successes and do not show the author’s name on the box of the game. The others games of these companies are created by the marketers of those companies : Operation, Mouse Trap, Fireball Island…
On the other hand, we have games for “Hardcore gamers”, where the author’s name shows up on the box. The rules are complex and the duration of a game lasts generally from 4 to 10 hours : Civilization, Hannibal, Rome vs Carthage, Res Publica Romana, Supergang, Full Metal Planete.

The early 90’s will see the arrival of german boardgames, with very simple rules, and reduced time of play. The german market of boardgames will become the most important boardgames market in the world, with more and more games, authors and publishing companies.

In France, the market starts to grow, with publishing companies such as “Asmodée”, “Days of Wonder” and authors like Bruno Faidutti “Valley of the Mammoths”, Bruno Cathala “Du Balai”, Philippe des Pallières “Was n’Das” or Serge laget “Mare Nostrum”…
Many authors create their own company in order to publish their creations. A few examples : Ystari games with “Ys" by Cyril Demaegd, “Lui-Même” with “the WereWolves of Millers Hollow” by Philippe des Pallières and Spottler Spellen with “Roads and Boats” and “Antiquity” by Jeroen Doumen and Joris Wiersiga.
The most appreciated games of this microcosm are :

- “The settlers of Catan” by Klaus Teuber, published by Kosmos.
It’s the game that has most contributed to the fame of this new boardgame generation to a large public. It is almost as famous as the Monopoly in Germany. The players are settlers who have to colonize the island of Catan and build the most important colony.

- “Puerto Rico” by Andreas Seyfarth, published by Alea and Ravensburger.
In this game, the players are rich governors who have to make money by cultivating and exporting corn, sugar, coffee, tobacco… to Europe.

- “The WereWolves of Millers Hollow” which is an adaptation of an old Russian game called “Mafia”.
The players are divided into two teams and have to eliminate the opposing team. But nobody knows his fellow-members.

- “Age of Steam” by Martin Wallace is a gestion game published by Warfrog in which the players have to create the most important railway company.

- Astract games like “Yinsh” and “Dvonn” by Kris Burm or “Abalone” by Michel Lalet and Laurent Lévi.
Each year a german jury decreets the most important prize in the world for the current year’s best boargame : the « Spiel des Jahres ». In 2005, a franco-american company, “Days of Wonder” win the prize with its game “ Ticket To Ride”. In France, there is the “Jeu de l’année” award, won this year by Peter Sarret and his game “Time’s up”. For the occasion, Patrice Laffont presented a french competition of “Time’s up”, during the international game festival in Cannes.
In France, the market is expanding, with a growing number of players, and more and more games each year. Internet plays an important role in this democratization of boardgames, because now everybody can buy those games, even if there is no specialized shop in the town they live in. There are also many boardgame clubs that are created and people can gather and talk about their hobby on websites that present all the boardgames like Trictrac.net.
We can say that today there is a ludic microcosm, with many interesting and unknown creations. But the games more widely known and sold are those of the big companies, that can use their communication means and large distribution network, just like comparing small innovative movies with big Hollywood flicks. It’s why today those companies offer many variations of games as The junior Monopoly, The Lord of The Ring Monopoly, The Star Wars Monopoly, The World’s marvels Monopoly, The Pokemon Monopoly, The Simpsons Monopoly, The britanny Monopoly. All those editions are very different : you have to throw the die, to move your pawn and to read the action you have to make. But if you have fun with that, then everything’s fine : a boardgame is first made to have fun with your family and your friends, together, around a table.

Et c’est parti pour le ptit Powerpoint ! :D
