Bonjour,
Bonjour,

A rien dans Rise of the Kage.

A look at the ninja profile
In the background stories the Shadow Wind Clan always send groups of three ninja. Openly this is because they see this as a sacred number and each individual brings unique skills to the group. Such skills would be impossible for a single man to possess. But in truth there is an element of distrust amongst the different houses and so an easy way to watch over their own interests is to ensure they always have a representa- tive of their house.
I wanted to bring these elements into the Rise of the Kage game play but since it was destined to be partially co-op (guards vs ninja) the distrust idea was left at the door but the different houses stuck and so the three types of ninja were followed through. Not only was this thematically cool but allowed me to create each ninja to be slightly unique and offer a slightly different role in context of the game.
The idea of the grandmaster selecting who they thought would have the most chance of success on each assignment appealed to me and so the ninja player is able to select the ninja for each mission after the mission card has been drawn. This allows the player to pick the three best ninjas suited to the mission at hand but keeping to one ninja from each house. This brings a small element of list building into the ninja selection.
So what is it that the different houses do best. The house of the Bleeding Moon excels at combat but at the expense of subterfuge. These ninjas’ traits will be more combat orientated, always good to have a brawler on hand when needed even if he is
a liability some times. The house of the Long Shadows, these ninja are true masters of stealth, capable of concealment even in the lowest of shadows, but not necessarily who you would call on when some muscle is needed. Their traits and dice will favor stealth actions. The house of the North Star, see merits and validity in both shadows and swords, they are also the most prepared of the ninja. These are the jack of all trades master of none.
Now to understand how these will play differently we need to discuss the ninja player mats. Firstly I wanted all ninja to be able to do all things but some to be better or worse than others. Since the background stories had already laid out the ideas for the different houses I could simply take reference from those in order to personalize the houses. The most notable difference is the dice pool. All ninja have a dice pool of four. What this means is that they begin the game with four dice. Whenever a ninja preforms an action it uses dice from his pool. Once it has no dice left he can no longer preform actions that turn, so his actions are determined by his available dice, actions available to a ninja are split into stealth and force actions. Each ninjas dice pool is made up of combination of these types of dice and is reflected in its colour. So as an example the combat ninja of the house of the Bleeding Moon will have 3 white force dice and 1 black stealth dice, making it far easier for them to perform multiple force actions but restricting their stealth actions.
To distinguish ninja within the same house the order of the dice pool will change. This is significant because when a ninja sustains a wound he loses the first available dice location of his pool. Meaning that if for example he only had one force dice and
it was the first dice in his pool he would no longer be able to perform force actions. At the start of a turn the ninja dice pool is replenished except for locations with wound markers on them, this means that if he is wounded he will be less effective because he will have access to fewer dice. Once he has no dice remaining it is the end of the road for that ninja. So you can see that the order of the dice pool can significantly change how a ninja potentially will operate.
The rolls of the ninja are further defined by each ninja having four traits Combat, Stealth, Reaction and Defence. The first three are simply modifiers added to the rele- vant type of action and Defence is the target number for attacks against that ninja. To truly make each ninja an individual they all have a special rule which will be unique to them and reflect the house they come from.
Ninja also have a different number of card slots. These allow ninja to equip them- selves with items they have looted or enhancement cards they have. A player can only ever have as many enhancements or equipment cards in play as he has card slots. All these strengths and weakness are intended to make the ninja choose between working in support of each other or independently but for the same end. In a game of Rise of the Kage both have their merits. Working together enables the ninjas to offset there weakness but means exploring less of the location. Working independently means more exploration but amplifies each weakness. As there is a set number of turns and
the ninja need to locate the target of their mission quickly and quietly this often becomes an excruciating choice, failure or death means defeat and shame.
Merci kensu. Dis donc t’es un vrai passionné !
Bonjour,
http://www.bushido-thegame.com
