[KS - terminé - financé] Tokaido Collector.

Bonsoir,
Merci d’avance.

Hi everyone!
It’s been a little time since we have posted the last update on the project but we are still active! Some of you asked us why we didn’t post an update sooner, well it is simply because we've had nothing new to share and decided not to spam your inboxes until we had some consistent news. :)
This week we received samples of the coins, the tray and the painted figurines, and now that we know more, we can give you informations on the status.
The coins
As we showed before, the coin's design was finalized and we’ve now starting producing them in a mass production process to make sure the quality will follow while produced at a larger scale. We are happy to say that they look great!
You can check them out in the picture below.
The Tray
When we received the tray sample we saw that the design was not perfectly fitting for all of the components. Indeed, some figurines are bigger than they were “in theory”, if the height is the same for all of them, the volume can change depending on the models.
We changed the tray design in order for all the figurines to fit in their dedicated spaces. In order to do that, we’ve resized the box to make the tray larger but the good news is that we could therefore also enlarged the board!
This small twist is turning out to become a good news! The box will be bigger than planned and the board will also be enlarged!
The new sizes:
>> Box will be 36,5 x 36,5 x 7 cm (centimeters)
>> Board will be 1,05 m (meter) x 35 cm (centimeters)
Once we receive the new version of the tray, we will show you the result.
The figurines
First of all, we would kindly like to ask all pledgers that are saying that we did not respected the initial estimated delivery time, to keep in mind that when we started the Tokaido CE campaign last year, we weren’t planning on delivering painted figurines. :)
We added this extra stretch goal during the KS as a response to pledgers requests and to the campaign success. The painting of the figurines is what is taking the most time and that is why we are behind the original schedule: offering painted figurines implied adding of a lot of production steps that cannot be overlooked. It is challenging both because it wasn’t originally planned and because we are offering something new, with no equal on the actual market: 35 high quality pre-painted figurines for 115$. Reaching the highest quality with that type of price range implies a lot of time spent working on production process, to make it happen.
Painted Samples
As you know we were waiting for new painted samples in order to see where we stand on the production status.
We received the new painted samples this week, and even though they are better than the ones the factory previously sent us, they are still not reaching the quality goal we defined.
Every time we’ve received a sample that was not reaching our expectations, we asked for changes and corrections. Each time, the factory had to create new masks, try them, correct them, try them again etc. This process takes a lot of time, and that is why we can wait for a long time to receive new samples.
Even if we rejected the last batch, the painting work is going in the right direction. We are getting closer to what we want as a final quality basic paint (with no stamps and no washes). The factory is currently handling modifications in order to sharpen the quality of the details.
Because our current factory is taking more time than we hoped to deliver the quality we agreed on, we’ve started to work with 2 other factories in order to speed up the process. There are now 3 factories working on the mini’s painting. And they will soon be sending us several batches of painted samples.
Rejected samples
In order to satisfy some requests and to show you the evolution of the painting work, we decided to display pictures of the different samples we received and rejected along the way.
Important: All the following samples have been rejected for insufficient quality, they are not the figurines that will be in the final game.
Step 1
What was wrong?
>>The plastic used was skin color whereas it should have been white and then painted with skin color paint.
>> Some parts of the figurines weren’t not painted (the crate part on the back of the merchant, his shoe soles, eyes, eyebrows etc.)
>>The paint is generally too rough, with colors overlapping each other.
Step 2
What improved?
>>The parts that were unpainted were painted.
>>The plastic was white and then painted with skin color paint.
What was wrong?
>>The paint was applied too roughly in general, with overlapping areas, and final render too vulgar.
>> The colors were also too flashy.
Step 3
What improved?
>>The general quality of the paint, we can see more details that have been sharpened. >>The paint has been applied more precisely.
>>Colors are more accurate.
What was wrong?
>>Even if the paint is more precise, it was still not close enough.
>>Few details are still too rough.
Step 4
What improved?
>>The general quality of paint.
What was wrong?
>>Some details are not applied precisely enough yet.
>> Absence of additional washes effects. Some of the models will have stamps (not the two models shown) and those were not applied properly, making the render too rough.
With this last sample we are getting really closer to what we want to obtain as a final result but we are still missing the final sharpening of details, the stamps and the extra washes effects that will finalize the minis. All 3 factories are working very hard on delivering new painted samples soon, and we will keep you updated when we receive them.
We are getting there, slowly but surely!
Have a great weekend,
Kindly,
Doria
